Muhammed Elgammal, fondly known as The Egyptian Cook, is an Egyptian-American Muslim who resides in the United States. From an early age, Muhammed's love for cooking was nurtured in his family kitchen under the guidance of his mother, whom he affectionately calls Mama. His curiosity was sparked by moments spent attempting to sneak bites of dinner as it was being prepared, only for Mama to hand him small tasks to keep him occupied. These moments laid the foundation for his passion for Egyptian cuisine, inspiring him to master traditional recipes and techniques that connect him to his heritage.
Muhammed’s journey has not been without its challenges. Diagnosed with Stargardt’s disease at a young age, he is legally blind, which presents unique obstacles in both cooking and creating content. Yet, Muhammed refuses to let these challenges define him. Instead, they fuel his determination to innovate and adapt, proving that passion and resilience can overcome any barrier. From maneuvering in the kitchen to crafting visually engaging content, Muhammed’s story is a testament to his ability to persevere and inspire others through his creativity and dedication.
In addition to his culinary passion, Muhammed is a graduate of Walsh College, where he earned a bachelor’s degree in business administration management. His educational background has provided him with the skills to grow his personal brand and connect with a growing audience. While pursuing his degree, Muhammed began sharing simple posts about his cooking on social media, never imagining the impact it would have. What started as casual story updates has grown into a community of over 250,000 collective followers who eagerly tune in to learn about Egyptian food and culture.
A hallmark of Muhammed’s content is his enthusiastic use of the phrase “Where’s the lahma?”—a fan-favorite catchphrase that adds humor and personality to his videos. “Lahma” means meat in Arabic, and the phrase originated as a joke he started with his family during a time when Muhammed had eliminated meat from his diet. Despite returning to eating meat years later, the phrase stuck, becoming a lighthearted way for him to connect with his audience. Fans now eagerly anticipate its appearance in his videos, where it serves as a playful reminder of his love for cooking and his ability to bring joy to others.
Today, Muhammed continues to share his passion for Egyptian cuisine with audiences around the world. Through his engaging social media presence, he invites followers into his kitchen to experience the rich flavors and traditions of Egypt. His mission is not only to celebrate his heritage but also to foster a deeper appreciation for the diversity of cultures that food can represent. Whether through his cooking or his iconic call for “lahma,” Muhammed Elgammal embodies the idea that food is a universal language capable of bringing people together.
